Elkhart Eco Park

November 23, 2011

ELKHART -- County officials in northern Indiana have approved a trash collection and recycling company's plans for taking over the site of a large farmers market that closed last year.

Elkhart County commissioners voted unanimously Monday to rezone the former American Countryside Farmers Market property so that Waste-Away Group can use it for trash and recycling operations and office space.

The company bought the property along U.S. 20 with a distinctive 51,000-square-foot red barn for nearly $3.8 million in June. The Elkhart Truth reports that Waste-Away hopes to attract other business to the 275-acre site it is naming "Elkhart Eco Park."

County Commissioner Mike Yoder says he's impressed with plans for the site despite the differences from what was envisioned when the farmers market opened in 2007.
