Food Waste During the Holidays

The holidays mark days of family, friends, gift-giving and reflecting on all of the wonderful things we have in our lives. One of these things is an overabundance of food.

Trash Facts

The following is a compilation of astounding facts about garbage and landfill usage. Put into these terms and perspectives, hopefully, will help to remind us when we make choices about what we throw away...and where we choose to put it.

Restaurant Recycling Revisited

With all of the new information available on recycling and all of the “Green Initiatives” being introduced, it would stand to reason that restaurants, more particularly fast food restaurants, would somehow fall into the recycling trend.  This would also seem true considering that restaurants are some of the biggest generators of recyclable material. There are, however, “no federal laws or regulations in the U.S. specifically aimed at getting fast food chains to reduce, reuse or recycle their waste.”*

Trash Carts....Weigh More Than Meets the Eye!

It is unbelievable how much trash Americans generate through the course of a week.  Estimates are that “1,600 pounds is the amount of trash the average American produces annually. With the garbage produced in America alone, you could form a line of filled-up garbage trucks that would reach the moon”.*  As astonishing as this number is, it’s just the tip of the iceberg since today’s fast-paced culture perpetuates the problem with readily available, pre-packaged everything!  In fact, speaking of packaging, “72 million tons of containers and packaging in 2009 ended up in the U.S. municipal solid waste stream or MSW. Packaging makes up 30 percent of America's trash — the largest portion of MSW generated”.*  Packaging....or rather over-packaging, seems to be an even more difficult problem when several types of packaging are not even recyclable by conventional means.
